☆ With Indiana Jones’s Return, Looking Back at the Opening Scene of ‘Raiders’

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (now in theaters) is the first film in that franchise not directed by Steven Spielberg, who developed the character all those years ago with George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, as well as the screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. Yet the handoff of directorial duties to James Mangold doesn’t feel like a strain, because Spielberg established the character of the globe-trotting archaeologist and the style of his cinematic escapades so adroitly over the first four films. In fact, he set them in stone in the very first sequence of the very first movie — as we can see in a shot-by-shot look that classic sequence today. We first see Indiana Jones less than 30 seconds into 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — but it’s a carefully prepared hero entrance, holding back Harrison Ford’s distinctive visage as long as possible. Instead, we first see him from the back, in a frame that nevertheless introduces the character and his distinctive iconography (his hat, bullwhip and jacket).

As a longtime big Hollywood star and hitmaker, Ford had already achieved an immortality of a kind. It’s pretty clear from his newest venture, the overstuffed if not entirely charmless “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” that while Indy may not in fact be immortal, the brain trust overseeing this installment wishes he were. They haven’t simply brought the character back for another go, they have also given him a digital face-lift. That said, the altered Indy is cognitively dissonant; I kept wondering what they’d done to — or perhaps with — Ford. “Raiders” was created by Spielberg’s pal, George Lucas, who saw it as a homage to the serials that he’d loved as a kid.

CNN —The archetypal white gown that Carrie Fisher wore while playing Princess Leia in 1977’s “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” could be yours to own, if you have a couple million dollars to spare. The site also lists the dress as a “historically significant piece” that “is the only Princess Leia costume known to still exist from the original film.”Costume Designer John Mollo created the gown for Fisher’s legendary character Princess Leia. CNN —Harrison Ford is officially in Marvel mode. On Tuesday, actor Anthony Mackie, who stars as Captain America in the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) “Captain America” franchise, shared a photo of himself hanging out with Ford on set. The retitling, from the previous name “Captain America: New World Order,” was also announced in an email from Disney on Tuesday. Ford is taking on the role of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, previously portrayed by William Hurt in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” followed by numerous MCU films including 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2018. It’s the first time that Ford has been pictured on the set of the new MCU movie.
